Whether you enjoy basketball, football, ice hockey, baseball or any other sport, there is bound to be a local team who you can get behind. Here we shall introduce you to these teams so that you have all the background information you need to start planning your bets.
Philadelphia Eagles
While not based in New Jersey, given the Philadelphia Eagles’ proximity to the state, it is no surprise that there are masses of fans in New Jersey. The team plays in the NFL as part of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division and their home games take place at Lincoln Financial Field.
The team was established in 1933 as a replacement for the Frankford Yellow Jackets, which had gone bankrupt. Since its creation, the Eagles have reached the playoffs 27 times, won 14 division titles (including 11 in the NFC East), appeared in four pre-merger NFL Championship Games, winning three of them (1948, 1949, and 1960), and reached three Super Bowls, one of which they won at the end of the 2017 season.
A number of players for the Philadelphia Eagles have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame including Chuck Bednarik, Bob Brown, Brian Dawkins, Reggie White, Steve Van Buren, Tommy McDonald, Greasy Neale, Pete Pihos, Harold Carmichael, Sonny Jurgensen, and Norm Van Brocklin.
As those in New Jersey will know, the team has a bitter rivalry with the New York Giants. It is one of the oldest rivalries in the NFL and the NFL Network has ranked it as the number one rivalry of all time. However, this is far from the teams only rivalry, they also consider the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Football Team, and the Pittsburgh Steelers amongst their rivals.
New York Giants
As fans will know, despite the name, the New York Giants home field is in New Jersey. They play their games at the MetLife Stadium, just 5 miles west of New York City but over the state border.
The Giants are the only one of five teams to join the NFL in 1925 that is still playing. It is also the NFL’s longest-established team in the Northeastern United States. Overall, they rank third amongst all NFL teams having amassed an impressive eight NFL championship titles, four of which were in the pre-Super Bowl era and four since the start of the Super Bowl, most recently in 2011. They also have had more championship appearances than any other team (19). Given this record, it is no surprise that the Giants have 29 Hall of Fame Players including the MVP award winners Mel Hein, Frank Gifford, Y. A. Tittle, and Lawrence Taylor.
While the Giants’ legal name may be “New York Football Giants, Inc.”, the team has many nicknames such as “Big Blue”, “G-Men” and the “Jints”. Often the team is referred to as “Big Blue Wrecking Crew”, a nickname originally applied to the team’s defense in the 1980s and early 1990s.
As mentioned above, the team has an intense rivalry with the Philadelphia Eagles, which can be traced all the way back to 1933.
New York Jets
The New York Jets also play at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The team competes in the NFL as a member of the AFC East division. Despite the team’s name, it also has its headquarters in New Jersey, at Florham Park.
The Jets were founded in 1959 as part of the American Football League and originally known as the Titans of New York. The name change came along with new ownership in 1963 and the team moved to Shea Stadium in 1964 and then to the Meadowlands Sports Complex in 1984.
It took until 1968 for the Jets to first reach the playoffs, but they went on to play in Super Bowl III, which they won by overcoming the Baltimore Colts and at the same time, became the first AFL team to defeat an NFL club in an AFL–NFL World Championship Game. Since then, the Jets have reached the playoffs 13 times and played in the AFC Championship Game four times, most recently losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010. However, they have never returned to the Super Bowl and they are one of just four teams to never win an AFC championship. As such, they have the longest drought of all NFL teams.
Brooklyn Nets
The Brooklyn Nets are one of three basketball teams that attract a great deal of support in New Jersey. They play in the NBA as part of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference and their home games take place at the Barclays Center.
The Nets was established in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA) and during their first season, they played in New Jersey as the New Jersey Americans. In 1968, the team moved to Long Island New York, and changed its name to New York Nets. Prior to the merger of the ABA and NBA, the Nets won two ABA championships, in 1974 and 1976.
The Nets returned to New Jersey in 1977 and they played as the New Jersey Nets from 1977 to 2012. During this time, with star point guard Jason Kidd, the team reaches the finals of two consecutive NBA seasons, 2001-02 and 2002-03, but failed to win either. They returned to New York in 2012 and changed their name once again, becoming the Brooklyn Nets. Since then, the team has qualified for the playoffs six times.
New York Knicks
The New York Knickerbockers, better known as the New York Knicks, are based in Manhattan. They play in the NBA as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with home games taking place at Madison Square Garden. The team is just one of two in the NBA to have remained in its original city since its inception.
The Nicks, established by Ned Irish in 1946, was a founding member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which later become the NBA after it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949. They were initially highly successful and regularly reached the playoffs under their first head coach Joe Lapchick. In the 1950s, he took them to three consecutive NBA Finals, all of which we lost, and he eventually resigned in 1956.
However, things improved in the late 1960s under head coach Red Holzman. He took them to two NBA championships, in 1970 and 1973. In the 1980s, the team reach the playoff six times but never the NBA Finals. The 1990s were slightly better, with the team reaching the NBA finals in 1994 and 1999, but they did not win a championship. Since then, the highlight for the Nicks was winning their first division title in 19 years in 2012-13. They then failed to reach the playoffs until the 2020-21 season.
Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers, better-known simply as the Sixers, play in the NBA’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division with their games taking place as the Wells Fargo Center. With the Center being so close to New Jersey, it is no surprise that many Sixers fans live in The Garden State.
The Sixers were founded in 1946 and were first called the Syracuse Nationals. They are one of the NBA’s oldest teams and one of just eight to last beyond the league’s first decade. Since those times, the 76ers have produced numerous Hall of Fame players, such as Dolph Schayes, Hal Greer, Wilt Chamberlain, Chet Walker, Billy Cunningham, Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson.
Recent years have not brought a huge amount of success for the team, but they have won three NBA championships. The first was as the Syracuse Nationals in 1955, the second in 1967 and the third in 1983. Since then, the Sixers have reached the NBA Finals just once, in 2001, when they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. However, in 2020, the team won the Eastern Conference division title for the first time in twenty years.
Philadelphia Phillies
Another Philadelphia team with a big following in New Jersey is the Philadelphia Phillies. They play as a member of the National League East division in the MLB and their home stadium is Citizens Bank Park.
One of the Phillies’ claims to fame is that it is the oldest continuous same-name, same-city franchise in professional American sports. They were founded in Philadelphia in 1883 and have played in several stadiums in the city, starting at Recreation Park and then moving to Baker Bowl, Shibe Park (later named Connie Mack Stadium), Veterans Stadium, and now Citizens Bank Park.
The team has won two World Series championships, in 1980 and 2008, and seven National League pennants, the first of which was in 1915. From the establishment of the modern World Series in 1903, the Phillies played 77 consecutive seasons before winning their first World Series, more than any of the other 16 teams that were in the major leagues in the first half of the 20th century.
However, since the start of the Divisional Era in Major League Baseball the team has enjoyed considerable success. They have won 11 division titles, five of which were consecutive from 2007 to 2011.
Between 1883 and 2021, the team’s overall win-loss record is 9,935–11,112. Unfortunately, they were the first American sports team to amass more than 10,000 losses and they hold the world record for the most ever losses by a single franchise in any professional sport.
New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils, based in Newmark, play as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference of the NGL. The club was founded in 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts in Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Denver in 1976 and becoming the Colorado Rockies. They moved once again in 1982, to East Rutherford, which is when they became the New Jersey Devils. They then spent 25 seasons at the Meadowlands Sports Complex before moving to the Prudential Center in Newmark prior to the 2007-08 season.
The team failed to find early success; they did not reach the Stanley Cup playoffs and didn’t’ manage to finish higher than fifth in their division, which had just six teams. However, things began to change when president and general manager Lou Lamoriello was hired in 1987. The Devils then made the playoffs all but three times between 1988 and 2012, including 13 consecutive times between 1997 and 2010.
The Devils won the Atlantic Division regular season title nine times, most recently in 2009-10, before they moved to the newly formed Metropolitan Division as part of the NHL’s realignment in 2013. They have reached the Stanley Cup Finals five times and won three times.
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers ice hockey team plays as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference in the NHL with home games taking place at Madison Square Garden.
The team was founded in 1926 and is one of the original six teams to play in the NHL before it expanded in 1967. They enjoyed early success under Lester Patrick, winning the Stanley Cup in 1928. The team then won the Cup again in 1933 and 1940.
However, for the next thirty years the team struggled somewhat and rarely made the playoffs. Things improved a bit in the 1970s, with the Rangers reaching the Stanley Cup finals twice, losing both times. The team was then rebuilt over much of the 1980s and early 1990s eventually going on to win their fourth Stanley Cup in 1994.
However, they were unable to repeat this success for a number of years and between 1998 and 2005 failed to reach the playoffs. However, things drastically improved after 2005 and they failed to make the playoffs just once between 2006 and 2017. The team reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014, but lost to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
While the team has not enjoyed much success in recent years, several former members are in the Hockey Hall of Fame and four of them, Buddy O’Connor, Chuck Rayner, Andy Bathgate, and Messier, won the Hart Memorial Trophy while with the team.
New York Islanders
The New York Islanders, better known as the Isles, play in as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference of the NGL with home games taking place at the UBS Arena.
The team was founded in 1972. They enjoyed early success and reached the playoffs 14 seasons in a row starting from their third season. They also won four successive Stanley Cup championships between 1980 and 1983.
However, the team later ran into problems with money, ownership and management. They also had an aging arena and were suffering from low attendance. This was reflected in their performance and they have not won a division title since 1987-88 and they went 22 seasons without winning a playoff season prior to the 2016 playoffs.
After the 2014-15 season, the team moved to the Barclays Centre. Over the following years they played home games at both the Barclays Center and the Nassau Coliseum before their new area near Belmont Park opened in 2021.
Eight former Isles players have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, most recently Pat LaFontaine in 2003.
Philadelphia Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers play as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference in the NHL. They were the first expansion team in the post-Original Six era to win the Stanley Cup, in 1973-74 and then in 1974-75.
Furthermore, the team now has the most appearances in the conference finals of all 24 expansion teams and they are second behind the St. Louis Blues for the most playoff appearances out of all expansion teams.
Since the team was founded, they have played home games on Broad Street, first at the Spectrum and then at the Wells Fargo Center. Historically, their biggest rivals are the New York Rangers, but they also have intense rivalries with the New York Islanders, the Boston Bruins, the Washington Capitals, and the New Jersey Devils.
Philadelphia Union
The Philadelphia Union are a professional soccer club that competes as a member of the Eastern Conference in MLS. They were founded in 2008 and began playing as an expansion team in 2010. The team has its home stadium at Subaru Park in Chester Pennsylvania.
At present, the Union is owned by Keystone Sports & Entertainment and Jay Sugerman is the majority owner and chairman. The head coach is Jim Curtin, who has been with the team since 2014. They finished as runners-up in the 2014, 2015 and 2018 U.S. Open Cup tournaments. In 2014, they lost to the Seattle Sounders 3-1, in 2015, they lost to Sporting Kansas City 6-7 on penalties, and in 2018, they lost 3-0 to Houston Dynamo. However, in the team won the Supporters’ Shield in 2020, its first ever title.
New York City FC
New York City Football Club is a professional soccer team that players as a member of the Eastern Conference in MLS. The club is owned by the City Football Group, the same organization that owns Manchester City, and Yankee Global Enterprises, the owners of the New York Yankees.
The team played its first game in 2015. Its biggest rivals are the New York Red Bulls, with whom they contest the Hudson River Derby. Since its founding, the team has mainly played at Yankee Stadium.
The club’s first coach was Jason Kreis and he held the position for just one year before being replaced by Patrick Vieira. Vieira took the team to their first MLS Cup playoff appearance the next season and to a runner-up berth in the Supporters’ Shield in 2017. Under Vieira, the team also set MLS records for the biggest improvement in wins for a consecutive season.
