Tonight’s Trio

Three bets worth considering on a Wednesday night

Philadelphia Phillies at Arizona Diamondbacks
Chase Field – Phoenix, AZ
9:40 PM ET
SuperBook Line: Arizona -130

One team is hot. One team is not.

Arizona has been one of the most-surprising teams in Major League Baseball this season. They boast a 41-26 record and sit atop the National League West standings

In large part, the Diamondbacks have amassed that mark by playing well both at home and on the road. They’re 21-15 at Chase Field and 20-11 away from the desert.

They’ve also been host of late. Prior to last night’s loss to the Phillies, the D-Backs had rattled off six-straight wins.

Philadelphia isn’t a very good road team. The Phils are just 14-23 away from home this season. They’re also 4-13 in their last 17 games in Arizona.

But those aren’t the biggest reason why the Diamondbacks are a great option on Wednesday night. The matchup on the mound gives them an edge.

Merrill Kelly gets the start for Arizona. He’s 8-3 on the season, with a 2.92 ERA. More impressively, the D-Backs have won in his last six starts.

The Phillies counter with Ranger Suarez. The lefthander is 1-2 on the season, boasting a 4.70 ERA. He’s a bad matchup for Arizona, as the Diamondbacks are 4-0 in their last four starts against a lefty.

Don’t overthink this one. Take Arizona to win at home.

Richard DeMala’s pick: Arizona M/L (-130)

Cleveland Guardians at San Diego Padres
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
9:40 PM ET
SuperBook Line: San Diego -135

Was the series opener on Tuesday the exception or the rule? That’s the question.

These two teams have nearly identical records. The Padres are 32-34, while the Guardians are 31-35. Last night’s win by San Diego broke the tie.

And both have been playing well of late. Cleveland entered the series having won four out of five, while the Padres have now notched a victory in four out of their last five games.

Something has to give. But figuring out the winner and the loser is tough.

Michael Wacha starts for the Padres. He’s 6-2 on the season, with a 3.18 ERA. He’s given up just four runs across his last five starts.

Aaron Civale counters for the Guardians. He’s 2-1 on the season, with a glossy 2.31 ERA. In two of his last four starts, the righty hasn’t surrendered a run.

Two good starting pitchers gets the wheels turning. Other starts move them into high gear.

Prior to Tuesday night, the under was 4-0 in Cleveland’s last four interleague games. The under is also 5-0 in the team’s last five games against the NL West.

Both of these teams struggle to score runs. Last night was the exception. The Guardians and Padres are each in the lower third of MLB in that department.

Look for a lower-scoring game at pitcher-friendly Petco. Take the under.

Richard DeMala’s pick: Cleveland-San Diego under 8.0 (-105)

Cincinnati Reds at Kansas City Royals
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
8:10 PM ET
SuperBook Line: Cincinnati -120

Very rarely is Cincinnati clearly the best team on the field. The Reds are middling this season, building a very modest 33-35 record. But the Royals are terrible, sitting at 18-49.

Kansas City is a laughingstock. The Royals have dropped eight games in a row, including the first two in Cincy.

Meanwhile, the Reds are playing well. They beat the Cardinals in a weekend series and have now taken the first two against the Royals.

Ben Lively hasn’t been great for Cincinnati this season. The righthander is 3-4, with a 4.21 ERA. But those four shutout innings he pitched two weeks ago in Boston are tantalizing. He’s allowed just 2.4 runs per game across his last seven starts.

Kansas City counters with Daniel Lynch. The lefty is 0-2 on the year, boasting a 4.41 ERA. In his last three starts, he’s surrendered 19 hits and 10 runs.

The Reds are favored in this one, but it should be by a wider margin. The price is great on this one.

Take Cincinnati in this one. The Royals are just abysmal.

Richard DeMala’s pick: Cincinnati M/L (-120)
