Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals play in the NFL as a member of the National Football Conference West Division. The team began life in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club and is one of the US’ oldest continuously run professional football teams. They play their home games at State Farm Stadium, which opened its doors in 2006.

The Cardinals joined the NFL in 1920 and together with the Chicago Bears, is one of just two franchises that has been operating since the league’s founding. In 1960, the club moved to St. Louis where it remained until 1987 at which point it moved to Tempe, Arizona. They moved to their current home field in Glendale in 2006, although the club executive offices and training facility remains in Tempe.

The Cardinals have won two NFL championships, both while they were based in Chicago, in 1925 and then again in 1947. Since then, the team has suffered numerous losing seasons and currently holds the longest active championship drought of North American sports, at 72 consecutive seasons. The team has reached the playoffs ten times and won seven playoff games. In the 2008-09 season, the Cardinals won their only NFC Championship game since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, and they reached the Super Bowl XLIII, which they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Furthermore, since their 1947-48 NFL championship game appearances, the Cardinals have won five division titles (1974, 1975, 2008, 2009 and 2015). They are also the only NFL team to have never lost a playoff game at home.

Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns play in the NBA as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The team is the only one in the division not based in California and it plays its home games at the Footprint Center. Furthermore, the Suns are the only one of the four major league sports teams in the Phoenix area that claims to represent the city of Phoenix rather than the state of Arizona.

The Suns franchise was established in 1968 as an expansion team and they did not have an auspicious start. However, things changed in the 1970s and they reached the 1976 NBA Finals. Unfortunately, they failed to win the series and spent much of the next decade rebuilding. Things improved when the Suns acquired Kevin Johnson in 1988 and the team reached the playoffs for a franchise-record thirteen consecutive appearances and remained a title contender throughout the 1990s. However, they failed to win a championship and once again fell into mediocrity.

This once again changed in 2004 and the team became famous for its fast, dynamic offence and they tied the franchise record in wins in the 2004-05 season. Unfortunately, it was then a long time until the Suns reached the playoffs. They finally returned to the NBA Finals in 2021.

Arizona Coyotes

The Arizona Coyotes play in the NHL as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference. The Coyotes began life as the Winnipeg Jets in 1971 as a member of the WHA before joining the NHL in 1979. They then moved to Phoenix in 1996 and became the Phoenix Coyotes. Finally, in 2014, the franchise became the Arizona Coyotes. The team first played at the America West Arena in downtown Phoenix before moving in 2003 to Glendale’s Gila River Arena.

The Coyotes had developed a reputation for instability under previous ownership. In 2009, the NHL took over operations of the franchise when the then-owner Jerry Moyes handed it over directly to the league after declaring bankruptcy. The NHL maintained control of the team until 2013, when it was able to find new ownership willing to keep the Coyotes in Arizona. At present, the Coyotes are the oldest team in the NHL to have never played in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Arizona Wildcats Basketball

The intercollegiate men’s basketball program at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona is called the Arizona Wildcats. They play in the Pac-12 Conference of NCAA Division I. The program has a long and proud tradition and it truly came to national prominence under the tutelage of former head coach Lute Olson. The program has produced a number of big name players such as Steve Kerr, Damon Stoudamire, Khalid Reeves, Mike Bibby, Jason Terry, Gilbert Arenas, Jason Gardner, Jerryd Bayless, and T. J. McConnell.

The Wildcats reached the NCAA Division I Tournament for 25 consecutive years from 1985 to 2009. They have reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament four times, in 1988, 1994, 1997 and 2001. The team also made two appearances in the National Championship, in 1997 and 2001. The Wildcats have won 16 Pac-10/12 regular season championship titles and seven Pac-10/12 tournament championship titles. They are also responsible for five out of the seven Pac-10 seasons in which a team lost one game.

Arizona State Sun Devils Basketball

The Arizona State Sun Devils men’s basketball team represents Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. At present, the team competes in the Pac-12 Conference.

The Sun Devils have played in the NCAA Tournament sixteen times, including 3 Elite Eights. They have won eight conference championships, four WAC and four Border Conference, and finished in the final AP rankings seven times. The highest national ranking the team has achieved is AP No. 3 during the 2017-18 season. They also reached AP No. 3 in the 1980-81 season with players such as Byron Scott, Fat Lever and Alton Lister.

A total of 36 Sun Devils have been selected in the NBA Draft including James Harden, Byron Scott, Isaac Austin, Lafayette Lever, Alton Lister, Lionel Hollins, Sam Williams, Jeff Pendergraph, Stevin “Hedake” Smith, Mario Bennett, Tommy Smith, Ike Diogu, Eddie House, Freddie Lewis, and Joe Caldwell.

Grand Canyon Antelopes Basketball

The Grand Canyon Antelopes men’s basketball team represents Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. They are a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and since 2020, they have been led by head coach Bryce Drew and play home games at the GCU Arena. The team moved to NCAA Division I and joined the WAC in July 2013. Prior to that, during their time as member of NAIA, they were national champions in 1975, 1978, and 1988.

In 2020-21, the team became the first ever Grand Canyon team to be chosen for March Madness, having been selected as a 15-seed in the West Region for the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Northern Arizona Lumberjacks  Basketball

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks men’s basketball team represents Northern Arizona University, located in Flagstaff, Arizona, in the NCAA Division I men’s competition. The team has played in the Big Sky Conference since 1970 and their most recent appearance in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament was in 2000.

At present, the team is led by interim head coach Shane Burcar, who replaced Jack Murphy in June 2019 after he departed for the Wildcats. Murphy had been head coach since April 2012, following a disastrous season in which previous head coach Mike Adras had resigned in December and the team lost its final 16 games.

Phoenix Mercury

Phoenix Mercury is a professional women’s basketball team that plays in the Western Conference of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The team was founded before the league’s inaugural 1997 season began and it is one of the eight original franchises to have taken part. The team is owned by Robert Sarver, who is also the owner of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns.

Impressively, the Mercury has qualified for the WNBA Playoffs in fifteen of its twenty-four years in Phoenix. Mercury reached the WNBA Finals in 1998, 2007, 2009, 2014, and 2021. In 1998 the team lost to Houston, but it won the title in 2007, 2009, and 2014 over Detroit, Indiana and Chicago, respectively.
